Meeting Local Needs
- Led statewide public places indoor smoking ban, igniting local efforts around the state
- Successfully authored law helping to prevent unfunded mandates on our local public school districts.
- Successfully authored a law helping firefighter pensions keep pace with inflation
- Was successful in co-authoring into law legislation giving Golden Valley residents bargaining leverage in negotiating water rates and terms with Minneapolis
- Sought balanced social studies standards in our schools
- Fought for better capital funding for the University of Minnesota and MNSCU and emerged as a leading advocate for higher education in Minnesota
- Authored improved funding of the Non-Game Wildlife Fund
- Authored legislation to regulate gift cards
- Co-authored bond funding of a pedestrian bridge over Hwy. 7
- Co-authored bond funding for storm water improvements in St. Louis Park
- Authored bond funding for the Perpich Center for Arts
- Led effort to sanction legislator Arlon Lindner for bigoted statements about gays and African-Americans
- Opposed further restrictions on a woman’s right to choose
- Supported expansion of prescription drug coverage for seniors
- Authored legislation to repeal Conceal-Carry legislation
- Successfully authored bonding provisions to reduce railroad noise and mitigate flooding in St. Louis Park and replace the railroad bridge in Golden Valley
