Gun Violence Prevention

Ron has led Minnesota's efforts to prevent gun violence, strengthen public safety, and reduce tragedies in schools and communities.

  • Authored Minnesota's Extreme Risk Protection Order (Red Flag) law, which allows temporary removal of firearms from individuals in crisis and has already been used hundreds of times to prevent suicides and violence.
  • Authored universal background checks to close private sale and gun show loopholes
  • Co-led Senate passage of the largest gun violence prevention package in state history, including measures to:
    • Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
    • Enact safe storage requirements to prevent accidental shootings and youth access
    • Reenact a ban on binary triggers
  • Advocated for investments in violence prevention research, violent crime prevention teams, and school safety specialists to address root causes of gun violence.

  • Championed equity reforms in policing including analyzing racial profiling, use of force interventions in wake of George Floyd's murder, and studying reduction strategies for civil rights incidents.

Protecting Courts, Preventing Violence, and Strengthening Public Institutions

Ron has worked to protect Minnesota's judicial system and public institutions from threats and violence.

  • Championed a comprehensive bipartisan safety and security package that strengthens protections at the State Capitol and in Minnesota's courts. The legislation provides dedicated courthouse security funding, upgrades weapons screening and physical security infrastructure, and creates a protective services unit for state officials.
  • Authored additional measures to improve court security and respond to rising threats against judges, lawmakers, and public servants.
  • Supports policies that protect democratic institutions while ensuring elected officials can continue serving the public safely and effectively, and the public can be safe while visiting the Capitol.

Ending Domestic Violence

Indigenous Justice

  • Strengthened tribal sovereignty by expanding opportunities for tribal governments to participate in Minnesota's community corrections system.

  • Worked to include the Office for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls in the 2023 Judiciary Omnibus and secured funding to expand the Office for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives and its advisory groups.

Immigration and Civil Liberties

As a direct response to Operation Metro Surge and ongoing federal immigration enforcement overreach in our communities, Ron Latz advanced his ICE accountability package through the Minnesota Senate this session, working to build safer and more just communities.

ICE package that Ron chief-authored:

  • Essential Spaces — Protecting childcare centers, schools, hospitals, and courthouses from unlawful immigration raids.
  • Preserving Investigations — Ensuring that state investigators can access crime scenes and evidence related to federal law enforcement
  • Right to Sue — Allowing Minnesotans to sue in state court when their federal rights have been violated
  • Unmask ICE — Barring federal agents from covering their faces while performing official duties unless it's for protection from smoke or other chemicals
  • Render Aid — Requiring that law enforcement help people they injure once any threat has been neutralized

Lowering Costs and Protecting Consumers

  • Delivered universal free school meals for Minnesota students.
  • Making College Affordable — Ron introduced the Minnesota College Affordability Act, legislation that would guarantee tuition-free undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Colleges & Universities for families making less than $125,000 per year. The bill covers both two- and four-year degree programs, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to opportunity for Minnesota students.
  • Protecting Consumers — Ron fought to protect consumers from unfair gift card practices, ensuring that people are not deceived by hidden fees or arbitrary expiration dates. Ron believes businesses should compete fairly and consumers should be protected from predatory practices.

Wages and Worker Rights

  • Raising the Minimum Wage — Ron championed raising Minnesota's minimum wage to $15 per hour. No one working full-time should live in poverty. Workers deserve wages they can live on, and businesses deserve workers who can focus on doing their jobs instead of worrying about making ends meet.
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave — Ron fought for paid family and medical leave policies that allow workers to take time with their families without losing their paychecks. When workers can afford to take time off to care for newborns, aging parents, or their own health, families are stronger and workers stay connected to the workforce.
  • Guaranteed earned sick and safe time for Minnesota workers.

Labor Endorsed

Minnesota's Only Labor-Endorsed Candidate for Senate District 46 — Ron is the only labor-endorsed candidate in Senate District 46. Minnesota's labor unions have endorsed Ron because they know he shows up for workers. His record proves it: he fights for fair wages, paid leave, workplace safety, and policies that give workers a voice in the economy. Ron believes workers built Minnesota, and they deserve a senator who has their backs.

Transportation, Infrastructure, and Roads

Highway 7 Pedestrian Bridge

Ron helped find alternative funding sources to construct the Highway 7 pedestrian bridge, improving safety and access for District 46 residents. He has consistently advocated for safe roads, reliable transit, and pedestrian and bike-friendly infrastructure that keeps our communities connected.

Southwest Light Rail

Ron has been a key legislative advocate for Southwest Light Rail, which will connect downtown Minneapolis to Eden Prairie through St. Louis Park and Hopkins. The 15-mile extension is expected to open in 2027 and will carry 34,000 riders per day by 2040. The project includes 8,690+ housing units planned within walking distance of transit stations, with 900+ specifically designated as affordable housing. The project represents $3.1 billion in regional development investment and creates walkable communities with 10+ miles of new sidewalks and 6+ miles of bike facilities.

DWI Reforms — Passed Unanimously

Ron championed legislation strengthening protections against repeat offenders. It extends the lookback period for DWI offenses and improves ignition interlock program requirements. Ron introduced this legislation in response to the tragic Park Tavern crash in St. Louis Park, demonstrating his commitment to keeping dangerous drivers off our roads and learning from local tragedies.
